Our Adult Education group meets most Sundays after our Fellowship Hour, in our church parlor. All are welcome to join the discussion.
Beyond Fundamentalism Book Group meets monthly at the home of David Avery and Victoria Millard, 5628 20th Ave. N.E., for soup and lively discussion. The next meeting will be Thursday, September 30, to finish our discussion of Walter Wink's The Powers That Be. This is a look at the power of non-violence to effect social and political change, with many examples that are historic firsts for humanity. Wink advocates training in the techniques of nonviolence as an important step in the formation of a human being. It may be understood in a spiritual way, but also in a pragmatic sense as a way of life--from interpersonal communication to global diplomacy. Nonviolence, called "The Third Way" of Jesus, is a step beyond the usual "fight or flight" response to aggression. It is neither pacifism nor violence. Returning violence with violence doesn't work, but only perpetuates a cycle of human suffering. Gandhi, King, Mandela, the countries of Eastern Europe, a woman faced with an attacker, a bullied boy--this book is full of successful applications and wondrous hope. Everyone welcome!
